JANET NELSON, M.S., C.O.E., ACSM
PHYSIOLOGIST AND EDUCATOR
Janet L. Nelson is the Founder of Manhattan Applied Physiology and is a credentialed physiologist with decades of clinical and instructional experience. Her mission is to empower through education, thereby providing individuals with the necessary tools to take care of their bodies, enabling them to thrive from the inside and out. This insures maximum quality of life at every age.
Janet holds a Masters of Science in Physiology from LIU, New York, where she received the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. In addition, she earned a BBA in accounting and finance from Eastern New Mexico University.
Her experience includes both research and treatment based applications. As an associate at Soar Biomechanics Laboratory she collected data and analyzed movement analytics pertaining to body placement and postural control utilizing electromyography (EMG), 3D kinematic and kinetic techniques for the purpose of analyzing pathology-induced functional movement loss following musculoskeletal trauma. Janet also led a clinical internship at Alvin Ailey Dance Company and Brill Physical Therapy, she continues to serve as resident physiologist for the cutting edge company, Ballet Next.
Her professional certifications are diverse and include those issued by the American College of Sports Medicine, Active Release Therapy, POSE Running Method Coach, National Academy of Sports Medicine, MP Flexibility Technician, Heart Zones Cardio Respiratory Instructor, and she is a Certified Office Ergonomist. As an educator, Janet has conducted numerous seminars in the realm of health and fitness and designed exercise programs for corporations and individuals for decades.
Her experiences include: ABC Affiliate Special Program Presenter, Preventive Medicine Exercise Specialist, Partcipant and Coach for Iron-Man Short Course Triathlons and Team Diabetes Kona Marathon. Annually she conducts the Tuscan Yoga and Wellness Retreat in Florence, Italy. Of late she has begun a program titled: “From Office Pain to Office Gain: Reduction and management of work related pain as caused by inefficient office ergonomics and the reorganization to corrected and beneficial ergonomics”.
Janet made her home and office in the Upper West Side of New York where she raised her three children and continues to enjoy long bike rides along the Hudson River and racing J-24 sailboats in the Hudson Bay. She is a member of the US Triathlon Association and has competed in over 60 Races. She is a member of the Manhattan Sailing Club, US Masters Swim Association, New York Road Runners, American Sailing Association and New York City Cycling Association. Janet is passionate about travel, yoga, Italian food and all the arts, especially dance.
