Yoga Training- Summary
Maria is currently registered through the Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 500 (yoga teacher trainer), an RPYT (registered pre-natal teacher), and continuing education provider (YACEP).

Maria has over a decade of experience leading yoga teacher training and has also attended workshops and training with yoga experts Seane Corne, Rod Stryker, Nancy Ruby, Jenny Otto, Baron Baptiste and more.
Maria was formally introduced to the physical practice of yoga at a gym in 1998 in her late teens and found the tradition to be deeply healing and nourishing during a period of grief in her heart, mind and body. The experience awakened an undeniable vocational calling that has guided Maria into a mainstream position to share the tradition of yoga with the masses and train aspiring teachers.
Back then there were no formal 200 hour teacher trainings and no Yoga Alliance. After a weekend with Yoga Fit gym yoga training, Maria was teaching at several gyms and studios in the SLC Valley. In 2002, Maria completed the Yoga Motion 200 hour yoga teacher training with Nancy Ruby, a student of B.K.S. Iyengar. The next five years were spent studying with many senior Anusara yoga teachers including; John Friend, Jamie Allison and Jenny Otto. Maria has also dabbled in power yoga training here and there.
In 2006, Maria was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and Crohn’s disease. The physical changes and onset of chronic pain resulted in a new avenue of practice and training in restorative yoga and gentle yoga. Maria turned to the work of Judith Lasseter and Donna Farhi, attending a 30 hour intensive training with Donna on gentle yoga for the spine. Restorative yoga and meditation have been monumental in helping Maria navigate developing the ability to coexist peacefully with the constant presence of pain and dis-ease. A vegan diet since 2016 has nearly eliminated IBD issues and established Maria in a lifestyle that is kinder on her body and the environment.
Maria taught in the Exercise and Sports Science department at the University of Utah and reached E-RYT designation, or teacher trainer status, with the Yoga Alliance. Also passionate about the benefits of prenatal yoga; Maria has taught pre-natal and restorative YTT modules as a guest teacher trainer for the University of Utah Yoga Teacher Training, Yoga Assets and Santosh Yoga Institute.
In 2009 Maria’s practice endured another shift when a car accident resulted in a two radial breaks requiring hardware that resulted in a fasciotomy and four surgeries in one week. She was told she would never do a plank pose again. Through patience, meditation and a willingness to slow down and adapt her practice while she healed, Maria gradually developed full range of motion and strength in her arm.
In 2010, Maria moved to New England with her husband and four children. In New Hampshire she began the endeavor of completing her college degree with a BA in History, minor Art History while teaching at a charming local yoga studio, Awakening Grace.
The Johnson family moved back to Utah in 2012. Maria began teaching community classes for Utah’s prestigious Westminster College. At this time, she also worked exclusively with collegiate football players at the University of Utah. Maria is trusted by a range of professional athletes in the NBA, NFL and NHL.
Maria became a brand ambassador for Lululemon in 2014 through the present. This experience with Lululemon has provided amazing opportunities to travel and teach extraordinary community wellness events.
In 2017, Maria graduated college from the University of Southern New Hampshire with a degree in History and minor in Art History, emphasis in south Asian studies.
After seventeen years of teaching, the time was right to develop her own 200 hour yoga teaching training program and start her Settled wellness brand. Maria designed and produces SettleDown heart shaped eye pillows as a relaxation accessory perfect for savasana, yoga nidra and restorative yoga. Maria is also teaching and hosting International wellness retreats and offering Yoga Sailing Holidays in Europe with MedSailing Holidays yacht tours.
